Product Review – Urban Decay Vice

I am a huge fan of Urban Decay. On any given day, I use multiple products from this line. Eye shadow primer, face primer and the original Naked eye palette. The products are top of the line, excellent pigmentation; not to mention A+ for staying power.

In case you haven’t noticed, liquid lipsticks are all the rage right now. If I were to look at my list of Facebook friends, I could pick out at least a dozen of them who are Lipsense consultants and they can’t keep their colors in stock!

I had noticed UD going this direction not too long ago and when I was recently at Sephora, I decided to go ahead and treat myself and grab one of these babies and give it a go. The color I picked was Amulet. With my skin color, I have a hard time finding that beautiful neutral pink that doesn’t turn too pink or orange on me. But, this color spoke to me, practically begged to come home with me. Never one resisting to take someone in and give them a good home, naturally, I bought it!

Vice

Here is how UD describes this hot product: This is Vice Liquid Lipstick—a waterproof formula so life-proof, it’s not going ANYWHERE until you take it off. (Just imagine the possibilities.) What makes Vice different? Our high-tech formula provides longer-lasting wear with ZERO transfer. Like our original formula, Vice Liquid Lipstick lays down intensely pigmented color. And the comfortable, nondrying wear sets it apart from other liquid lipsticks. (Ok, I’m sold!)

This is how they tell you to apply it: Vice Liquid Lipstick gives you endless color in three steps. First, line lips with the precise applicator; then apply one coat to fill. Do not press lips together. If desired opacity is achieved, let dry. A little goes a long way, but for more coverage, apply a second coat. Let dry completely and you’re good to go. (Easy enough, right?)

I knew going into this that most liquid lipsticks can be very drying to your lips. According to an article I came across online, your lips only have 3 to 5 cellular layers of skin, as opposed to up to 16 layers of skin the rest of your body has. Translation: The skin on your lips is super thin.

I followed directions specifically and after I knew the color was set, I applied a moisturizing gloss to keep my pucker hydrated.

So, what’s the verdict? For staying power, this was amazing. The color lasted me all day. Even when I indulged in the #9, fully loaded from Jimmy John’s for my lunch, this color stayed put! However…………

I wanted to love this. I really, really did. I’ve not once been disappointed with anything UD has to offer, but the drying factor was more than a factor. I think out of the 3-5 layers of skin my poor lips have, I lost at least 2 of those layers after only one day of use! It’s taken me weeks to get my lips feeling normal again. And, what baffles me more than anything? All the 5 star reviews this product is getting online! The colors are beautiful, there’s no denying that! I realize that products affect people differently. Unfortunately, this one didn’t work for me.

Enough about me. What about you? Have you tried Vice by UD? Are you a lover, or did you experience the same fate that I did? Are you a UD makeup artist? If so, reach out to me, tell me what I did wrong or how to make it right! I hate not loving a product, especially by a brand I’ve supported for so long!

As always, I look forward to your responses!

What I’ve Been Up To

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything. Life has been pretty busy. I’ve relocated twice in four years and that takes a decent toll on a person. I tried to get back into blogging a few years ago, but then something happened.

I found myself in perhaps the most boring job, EVER. I was working front desk at H&R Block for tax season. During the height of the season, and by that, I mean April 10-15 when everyone is rushing to get their taxes done, it was a very busy job. But between January and April, it was boring. And by boring, I mean total snooze-fest. Internet access is extremely limited for the safety of the customer’s information, so really the only sites I could get on were Google and Amazon. But, if I browsed too often, it was clear Big Brother was watching, and soon the sites that I could navigate were blocked.
No music plays in an H&R Block office. Why? Because they say it can distract the tax pros, therefore it stays quiet. Even quieter than a library. You hear every sniffle, every subtle cough, the rustle of clothing as one reaches for a pen, the click of the pen as its put into use; even the sound of the pen as it swishes across paper. You could literally hear a pin drop.
I asked one of the tax pros how a person is supposed to keep their sanity with the silence, no internet and an already clean office, because 2 hours into a shift and that was taken care of. They had plenty of work to do, I did not. One day, one of them told me that a former admin used to do his homework to pass the time. Well, that’s all fine and good for him, but I wasn’t in school, so what was I to do? As I would sit, being bored to tears, I started to daydream. I’ve always been very good at daydreaming. My mind would drift into that wonderful world of imagination and fill my hours. Then I thought, hmmm, maybe, do I give it a shot? What happens if I do? Or, more importantly, what happens if I don’t? I had nothing to lose and plenty of time to kill, so I went for it.

Here’s what happened.

I wrote a book.

Oh, a beauty book, you ask? What a great idea since I have a beauty blog.

Um, no. I wrote a romance novel. Whaaaaaaaaaaaat? What the heck am I doing writing a romance novel when I have such a passion for the beauty industry? If I ever figure out that answer, I’ll be sure to tell you, because I don’t know what happened. The floodgates opened and I went with it! And the funny thing is, I didn’t just write a book. I wrote a series of books. Mid-way through my outline, I thought maybe I had enough for a trilogy. Then I kept going and realized I had more than enough for a series.

So, hopefully you’re on the edge of your seat, waiting for the first book to come out, because it’s coming. It’s in the final edit and I’m self-publishing. As soon as it’s ready to go, I will share the news, and hopefully you’ll all help me spread the word.

In the meantime, I do want to post product reviews and offer any advice that I can. The platform of my blog will change slightly as I want to focus not only on beauty, but on fashion, accessories, lifestyle and anything that defines beauty. So, stay tuned, I have a few reviews I’m working on that are coming your way.

Tell me what you’ve been up to! What beauty products have you been loving lately? Looking forward to interacting with all of you again! And, as always:

Product Review…Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Cream

For all your beauty advice…

Fekkai

I recently had the opportunity to sample Brilliant Glossing Cream, by Fekkai. Olive oil is the main ingredient in this product. It’s used to add shine and a pretty polish to your hair. The directions say to use it on damp, or dry hair. Use it on damp hair as a styling cream, or use it on dry hair as a finishing cream to add shine.

I tried it both ways. As a styling cream, I really liked it. My hair is wavy, and is desperate to be curly, but it tends to lean more towards the frizzy side. I put this on my damp hair and let it air dry, and it really brought out the natural curl in my hair…not many products do that for me! I was very impressed to see some actual ringlets in my hair!

When I tried it as a finishing cream, I liked it, but I used just a little too much, so my scalp felt a little oily through the day. The next time I used it, I made sure to use a little less, and I loved it!

When your hair is damp and you add a product like this, the “wet” in your hair tens to dilute the product and not make it feel so heavy. When you use it on dry hair, it’s more concentrated, so a little truly goes a long way.

The directions state that you should only use an amount the size of a pea…take this advice! More is not more; less is more! Nothing feels worse on your hair than having that “coated” feeling.

Pros: Smells great, makes your hair feel and look smooth, and it makes you feel like you were just in a high-end salon. Cons: It’s pricey…BUT, since a little goes such a long way, one tube should last a very long time!

Have you tried it? Let me know what you think!

Beauty From The Inside Out…Day 19

19

Today was day 2 of my new workout program I started, and all I can say is, WOW and OW!!! My muscles are on fire! So far, they’re fun workouts, so let’s hope it stays that way so I don’t get bored.

I got a little “snacky” today, and I had a heavier lunch than I should have. Dinner is very light for me, and of course, my friend Chardonnay will be paying me a visit…or two…or three. I really hate that you have to count wine in your points, but it does open your eyes and make you realize how much you have, and it sucks to see those extra weekly points dwindle because of a drink…or two…or three!

That’s about it for today. I hope you’ve enjoyed my journey so far. It’s amazing that my challenge is over in just a few days; this went by really fast for me!

Have a great night everyone!

Beauty From The Inside Out…Day 18

18

Staying on track was good today. Like I’ve said before, I’m not a breakfast person, but I’ve started to realize that when I make the effort to eat breakfast, I usually eat well for the rest of the day. Today I started my day with a chocolate breakfast shake with almond butter in it. Chocolate covered almonds are a weakness of mine, so to have something for breakfast that tasted like one of my favorite treats was definitely a plus.

Along with eating right, I know it’s important to work out and work up a good sweat. Working out makes you feel good, and it gets the blood circulating, and that makes your skin look good, and over time, it helps with your hair and nails.

I started a new workout today; it’s a new dvd set I bought recently. Have you heard of Hip Hop Abs? I got it for a few reasons. #1, it was on a pretty good sale. (I got it through Beachbody. I’m not a coach, but I know someone who is, so if you ever need a connection there, let me know and I’ll pass her info on to you!) #2, the idea of the workout is to get good-looking abs without having to do sit-ups (sign me up!) and #3, Shaun T., the trainer keeps the workout fun, fast-paced, and he’s really easy on the eyes…OMG, is he easy on the eyes. He definitely keeps my attention! 🙂

Today’s workout was fun, and it went by fast…that’s huge for me! If you give me a good dance routine, I’ll go with it and not notice how long it’s going to last. If you tell me to do 100 squats, you lose me after 10.

So, my WW 21-day challenge is about up, but I might keep you posted with my new workout I started today. We’ll see!

Beauty From The Inside Out…Days 15-17

15-17

Another challenging weekend, but I survived! The funny thing is, my weekends are usually very calm, so the fact that I’ve had back-to-back challenging weekends is just perfect since I’m sharing with everyone, right? Here’s a recap:

Day 15: Date night with my hubby. My husband is a very busy man, so having an entire evening set aside for dinner and a movie was definitely special this week. He took me to a very nice Italian restaurant and then we went to a movie. Once I looked at the menu, I knew I was not going to be able to stay on track 100%. And you know what? That’s ok. That’s what I love about WW; it really supports the world we live in. We had appetizers, we had our main course, and we had dessert. Then we had popcorn at the movie. I’m not too worried because it was a special night and it’s not like we go out all the time. Fun night, good food, special time with my man.

Day 16: I made a pretty indulgent dinner for my family, but still managed to stay within my points. The big thing I noticed when I indulge is, I can only eat about half of what I used to eat when I decided to be “bad”. That is a victory in itself, because in the past I would eat and clear my plate and then feel awful. I stopped when I was full, and didn’t feel awful!

Day 17: Got right back on track today and had a good day. It feels good to cheat here and there, but getting back on the wagon and knowing I’m doing the right thing for my body (and my vanity) feels good!

Just a few more days with this challenge, but I will continue with WW. I’ve thought of a few other challenges I might want to share. Are you interested? Thoughts and comments are always welcome!

Beauty From The Inside Out…Day 14

14

Officially 2 weeks into my 3 week challenge! Thanks for staying with me, if you’ve been reading along. I haven’t been perfect in this self-challenge, but I’ve learned some things in the past few weeks and I’ll take that knowledge and put it to use as I move forward. And yes, I do plan to move forward after the 21 days is over, and continue to count WW points.

Today was a good day. I had some cravings, but I’ve noticed when my cravings start to get out of control, that means I need to eat. I made a yummy smoked salmon pizza on a whole wheat tortilla for lunch today. Paired with a big salad, it was very filling and I didn’t have a huge urge to snack in the late afternoon. I did snack, but I kept it healthy.

I’m looking forward to going into this weekend with a clear head, and no obstacles since I will be home all weekend…yay! I haven’t moved as much as I should have this week, and I’m feeling lazy, so it’s time to get a good workout in tomorrow! I’m starting a new exercise program on Monday and I’m looking forward to that!

How was your day?

Beauty From The Inside Out…Day 11

11

Well, I’m still coming off my quick weekend trip and I did good today. I’m exhausted, so I’ll keep this short.

This is the first time traveling that I have ever felt so dehydrated, it’s crazy! I’m thirsty and tired, and I am ready for bed. I feel like an old woman! Ha ha! My day started good with a protein packed breakfast and a light lunch. I kept it all in check with roasted veggies and salmon for dinner.

This last weekend taught me so much! I realized how good I feel and look when I put the right foods into my body. Most important, I really understood the importance of water. I know it’s important, but most of the time I just don’t care because I hate water. I have gained a new respect for something so simple!

I am more than halfway through this self-challenge and even though I’ve had some challenges and a set-back this weekend, I feel good about it. A good night’s sleep is on tap for tonight and a good workout is on the agenda for tomorrow!

Have a good night, everyone!

Beauty From The Inside Out…Day 7

7

Sorry this is so late in the day. It’s been a crazy day, and this is my first time even looking at my computer today.

Today was one of those days that life threw me a challenge, and not a chips and popcorn type of challenge. I had to wake up way too early and I knew this was going to test my day. When I wake up before the sun…WAY before the sun…I have very strange eating habits all day long.

I had my coffee this morning, with my flavored cream, and that was it, for about 3 hours. I KNOW! I should have eaten something with that coffee, but really, who wants to eat at 3:00 in the morning?? So, I threw a Kashi bar in my bag (3 WW points) and did what I had to do. I started to feel very hungry around 6:00, who wouldn’t? So, I had my Kashi bar, but made the horrible mistake of having an extra cup of coffee with the bar. Oh, I forgot to mention, the bar was mocha flavored, so there was a whole lot of coffee going on in my empty stomach. The Kashi bar did its job, but the extra coffee screwed with me. Sometimes one cup of coffee is so good, that two must taste better, right? Wrong! I felt like there was a hundred butterflies fluttering in my stomach and this just made me shaky, so I didn’t eat again until 2:00.

So, earlier in the week, I was griping about being bored. Well, today I had too much to do and didn’t have time to eat, and that’s a whole different issue, right? I finally had lunch at 2:00, when my tummy told my body the reason my hands were shaking like a leaf was because I needed to eat. Luckily I made the right choice and chose Subway over Wendy’s. Huge victory there! Usually, burgers trump any food for me. They are a major weakness. I had my Subway with a bottle of water and no chips. I was satisfied, so woo-hoo!

Dinner was salmon with roasted veggies and a glass of wine. I stayed within my points, and beat a stressful day. I think I need to carry more snacks with me when I’m faced with days like this!

FYI…I may not get a chance to post every day this weekend, so if you don’t see a post for Friday or Saturday, I will recap them with Sunday.

Beauty From The Inside Out…Day 6

6

Ok, today was a much easier day than yesterday and I know why. I didn’t touch a chip, or that low-cal popcorn that derailed me the last 2 days. Funny how something that’s supposed to be healthy messed with me! I had a good protein-packed breakfast and a sandwich for lunch that was really good. I came across a new product today that punched up the flavor of the sandwich and I didn’t miss a lovely side of, you guessed it, chips! Have any of you tried the sandwich spreads by Mezzetta? Oh, my goodness, they are so good! No need for mayo, or even mustard with these on your sandwich. I had the Peperoncini & Feta spread today. It was pretty spicy, but it had so much flavor. Give it a try and let me know what you think! http://www.mezzetta.com/spreads

Another thing that worked in my favor for success today was the fact that I was busy and was out of the house. Like I said, I am not working right now and because I don’t know anyone out here, I am home by myself a lot. When I have things to do, it takes my mind off munching and I didn’t miss those salty snacks that have been such an issue. Note to self: Keep busy! Any tips from anyone on how to get social in a new area are welcome. It’s amazing how boredom can make you want to eat. Before you chime in just know that we have a gym here at our apartment, I have volunteered at my daughter’s school, and I have my WW meetings. Still no luck in finding a Nor-Cal BF (not that my CO BFs can be replaced, but I need a pal, people!) I’ve seriously considered some kind of personal ad for a friend, but I’m pretty positive it will be misinterpreted and cause me all kinds of problems.

I do like to exercise. I don’t like to gear up to exercise, but I always feel really good when I’m done, and I know the circulation you get from a workout is great for your skin!

One great spot in my day: My WW meeting leader saw a post I had put on the Facebook page of our local WW group, and she sent me a private email to check on me and make sure I got the answers I needed to hear. That was a bright spot in my day. It’s really great to have the support of your WW leader because they have been there and they know what you’re going through and they know when you start to slip. I swear it’s like she can read my mind sometimes! I was going to say you can’t buy that kind of support, but since I pay a monthly fee for WW, I guess I am buying it. Ha ha! She’s awesome. She lost 76 pounds with WW and has kept it off for about 15 years. She’s adorable, and has a sassy little hair cut that I could never pull off.

Thanks for reading! I’m nearly one week into this, and so far, so good.
