Q&A Monday

For all your beauty advice…

Good morning, and Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great weekend and you’re enjoying the fact that Spring is in the air! Thanks for the great questions this week…read on about making clean hair look dirty, what’s the best thing to use for eye makeup removal, and what to do if you’re stuck in a rut…and like it!

Dear Brooke, I have to wash my hair every day…HAVE TO! I have tried so many times to skip a day, and I just can’t do it. But, I do like the way hair looks when it’s unwashed. Any tips on how to achieve the look of dirty hair, but still wash it every day? Thanks! Rebecca T.

Dear Rebecca, First of all let me tell you, I know how you feel. It took me a very long time to embrace skipping a shampoo here and there, and sometimes, I’m still not used to it. You should try to skip a day, but if you absolutely can’t, you can still get the look of 2nd day hair. Jonathan Silky Dirt is a great product that will give even squeaky clean hair that look. The second you apply it, you will notice a difference in texture and the way your hair behaves overall. Another trick to try is applying dry shampoo to your roots when your hair is dry. It gives you lots of volume and texture and will help you get that messy look, even when your hair is clean. I love Batiste Dry Shampoo for the days I want to skip (yes, it actually allows you to skip a shampoo), and when I want a little more texture to my hair. Good luck, and let me know what you think!

Dear Brooke, I am 12 and just starting to wear makeup. When I go to remove my eye makeup at night, I use a remover on a cotton ball, and sometimes just on tissue. The cotton ball seems to fall out of my hand a lot, and tissue falls apart and I don’t feel like I’m doing it right. Do you have something else in mind I should use? Demetra D.

Dear Demetra, Welcome to the world of makeup! Well, let me start by saying, good for you that you’re actually taking the time to remove your eye makeup at the end of the day. It can be a step most girls your age just skip. Tissue is definitely not your best choice, because it’s too thin and as you found out, just falls apart. Using a cotton ball is good, but you don’t have a lot of control over it because it’s so small, and like you said, it falls out of your hand a lot. I swear by cotton rounds for eye makeup removal. They are like a flattened out cotton ball in a circle shape. You can find them right next to cotton balls at drug stores, so they’re easy to find. They’re thin, so you won’t waste eye makeup remover, and they’re big enough to hold on to, so they don’t fall out of your hand. Give them a try, I think you’ll like them. Thanks for the question!

Dear Brooke, Someone just recently told me that if I can’t remember the last time I changed my hairstyle, it’s outdated and I need to make some changes. I haven’t changed my hairstyle in years, but I don’t want to! Are there really “rules” I have to live by? Do I have to feel bad about myself because I found a style I like? I would really appreciate your thoughts on this subject. Annie M.

Dear Annie, This is a great question! In this industry, it is important to keep up with styles and trends and not get stuck in a beauty rut. But, if you’re not in this industry and you’ve truly found a style that works for you, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It’s your hair, and if the style is one you’re comfortable with, and it’s not boring you, then don’t make changes for other people…make them for you. If you’re feeling like maybe it’s time for a little change, but don’t want to go drastic, you can try a few options. First, consult with your stylist and get their opinion on what subtle change they think would look good on you. Maybe you’ll want to try bangs, or go for a different color to change things up a bit? There are small ways to modify the cut you have now that won’t freak you out, but will have others noticing you did something different. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to try a few new things. The best thing to remember is, it’s only hair, and it will grow out.
