Q&A Monday

For all your beauty advice…

Good morning, and Happy Monday! I hope you all had a great weekend…do you wonder, as much as I do, why it goes by so fast? Thanks, as always, for the great questions this week. Read on about eyeshadow primer, tanning, and red carpet glam.

Dear Brooke, I love cream eyeshadow, but it creases on me by lunchtime. You’ve talked about eyeshadow primer in the past, but I still haven’t tried it. Which one do you like the best, that will work the best with a cream shadow? Thanks! Jenny K.

Dear Jenny, I have yet to meet an eyeshadow I don’t like, and I wish someone had introduced me to primer years ago. There are some great products on the market right now, to keep your shadow in place. Urban Decay makes a great primer, Mary Kay has one you can trust, but my absolute favorite eyeshadow primer is Shadow Insurance by Too Faced. I have very oily skin, even my eyelids tend to be oily, but Shadow Insurance will keep your makeup in place. With some primers, you have to work fast, because they really set your makeup, but Shadow Insurance lets you blend as much as you need to. Try it, and let me know your thoughts!

Dear Brooke, I have a question about tanning. If Vitamin D is supposed to be so good for you, why is going to a tanning bed so bad for you? Can’t I get my daily D going to a tanning salon? Vikki A.

Dear Vikki, I think this may be a question for your dermatologist, not me. But, I will give you my honest opinion about tanning beds. From what I know, tanning beds aren’t providing any Vitamin D for you, they are just exposing you to the harmful rays doctors recommend you protect yourself from; that’s probably why you tan so fast in a tanning bed. I’ve never heard of any good side effect from using a tanning bed; I’ve only heard about increases in skin cancer, wrinkles, and other things we try to avoid happening to our skin. If you’re looking for an instant glow, I would go for a Mystic Tan, or try an at-home self tanner.

Dear Brooke, I’m going to an Oscar party this coming Sunday and really want to play up the Hollywood theme. Can you suggest any make-up and hair tips that can have me looking red carpet ready in a flash? Hair up or down? Curly or straight? Thanks! Kim A.

Dear Kim, I love Hollywood themed parties! Going to a theme party like that is a great way to try new looks. I’m seeing both updos and long locks on the red carpet lately, so either one is going to be a good choice. If you wear your hair down, wear it in loose waves/curls. It’s pretty easy to get that look; the easiest way for me is with a large barrel curling iron or velcro rollers. If you go with an updo, make it a messy one…just twist your hair up and secure with a few pins and leave the hair around your face loose. As for makeup, play up either your eyes or your lips. If you want to try a smoky eye, make sure you have a nude lip, and if you want to rock some red lipstick, keep your eye makeup very neutral. Add a bold piece of jewelry, and you’re good to go. Have fun!

  1. Hi Brooke, I hope you have a wonderful President’s weekend.

What kind of self tanning product would you recommend for a fair person. I do tend to have break outs from self tanning products.

    1. Hi Ellen! Clarins makes a nice self tanner, and I have always heard how great it is, how even the color is, and that it’s a good choice for sensitive skin. TanTowel is another one that will give you good results; the application on that is pretty simple, because it’s a pre-moistened towel.
