Get Boo-tiful This Halloween

For all your beauty (boo-ty) advice…

Sorry, couldn’t resist the title! For many people, this is their favorite time of year. The crisp of leaves that have fallen from the trees, the smell of cider, the fun of carving pumpkins and baking the seeds. And, the anticipation of the perfect Halloween costume. Halloween is the perfect time of year to let your creativity flow, and it’s absolutely the best time to play with your makeup and try new trends. Glitter, red lipstick, fake nails, false eyelashes…Halloween expects no less. When creating your perfect face for your costume, you’ll want to ensure your look stays put all night. Even if your costume doesn’t!

Whether you are going all-out and getting extravagant like a Glam-pire or Cleopatra, or keeping things simple like a ghost or a pumpkin, you’ll want to make sure you start with a clean slate. Make sure your skin is clean, dry, and primed before you start applying your makeup. Use a foundation primer, and an eyeshadow primer to make sure your colors stay put. Typically, the makeup you apply for your costume is going to be much heavier than what you wear on a daily basis…for some of you, anyway. I hear it said all the time: “less is more”, “if you have a smoky eye, make sure you have a nude lip”, “if you go for a bold lip, make sure your eyes are low-key”. Ignore all of that for Halloween. More is more…more glitter, more lashes, more lipstick…it all equals more fun!

Halloween expects dark, bold colors. How else will your costume stand out? Have fun with heavy eyeliner and false eyelashes. Why the lashes, you may ask? Aren’t they an extra step I don’t really need? Nope. You will be surprised what adding lashes can do to complete your costume. They add an extra layer of drama and let you see how beautiful your eyes are with super-long lashes.

Lipstick colors in red, purple, hot pink, etc. are so much fun this time of year! Especially red. Not many of us wear dark/bright red lipstick on a daily basis, so have fun with this one. The same goes for glitter. Put some on your eyes, lips, or cheeks as a finishing touch, and don’t forget to sprinkle some in your hair. Halloween is the one time of year that looking a little bit like a disco ball is perfectly acceptable.

Afraid nail art may be considered tacky? Again, Halloween is the perfect time to try trends you might normally stay away from. You can easily incorporate some fun nail art into your costume. It doesn’t matter if you have artificial nails, or natural nails, grab a fun nail polish to complete your outfit and add some nail art, or some nail jewels for some extra effects.

You know what the great thing is about nail polish, heavier-than-normal makeup, and false eye lashes? They’re all temporary! You can take them off that night, (or the next day in most cases), and if it doesn’t look quite right at first, remove it and start again. No commitment! Except for the glitter, maybe. That stuff, fun as it is, stays with you for a while.

So, have fun with some color this Halloween and play around with trends you might never try on a normal day! Stay safe, and have a Happy Halloween. What are you going to be this year?

What’s In My Makeup Bag?

For all your beauty advice…

Anyone who knows me, knows I have a lot of makeup…a lot. A friend was at my house not too long ago and she was in my bathroom and she looked at all my makeup and asked me if I really use everything. I told her, “Yes, I know where everything is and it all has a purpose”. Some people collect sports cards, some people collect records, I collect lip gloss! People who ask for my advice usually end up asking me what I carry around in my makeup bag. That makes me feel like I’m the celebrity being interviewed for In Style magazine! (someday!) I guess people wonder, if I’m reviewing products and giving beauty advice, what are the things I must have in my purse on a daily basis?

Well, first I’ll tell you that I believe a good purse should be able to hold a pair of shoes and a bottle of wine, at the same time. Not to mention everything I need for beauty emergencies. (The thing is, I have more than one makeup bag…and they’re all full of products I can’t live without. I know I’ve said it in the past, and one day I’ll actually put the pictures up…I have an altar of products! Way too many to believe unless you’ve actually seen it, but it is mine and it is important to me!) I am going to grab the makeup bag that is in my purse right at this moment and tell you what I use, and can’t live without, every day.

Get Even by Benefit. This is a pressed powder compact that is a great go-to item when you need to freshen up in the middle of the day. I use shade 02, and I reach for this product at least once a day. It helps even out redness, touch up foundation that’s worn off, and absorb oil. Can’t live without it! Even when I change makeup bags, this one travels from bag to bag with me.

Lipgloss, lipgloss, lipgloss!! With how much I write about my love for lipgloss, can you truly say you’re surprised to find out that I carry many lipglosses in my makeup bag? The funny thing is, they all are about the same shade. Just now, as I did the count, I have 7 (yes, 7!) lipglosses in my makeup bag. Most of them are a shimmery nude color that I like to top my lipstick with, but a few of them are a pretty plum/pink when I change-up my makeup palette for the day. From L’Oreal, to Nars, to MAC, to Dior, to Lancome, I can’t live without any of these. (Well, I probably could, but I don’t want to!) Lipgloss is great when you need just a small amount of color, or some moisture, but it can really pull a look together when you put it on top of your lipstick. You’re never fully dressed without a gloss!

Goody Hair Bands. I keep these snag-free elastics with me all the time, and I have for years! They come in fun colors, but they also come in great neutrals that match your hair. I like the neutrals that match my hair because I can throw it back in a messy bun and you can’t see the hair band. I always make sure to carry extra with me, because I never know when a pal is going to need to pull her, or his, hair back and isn’t prepared…I am ALWAYS prepared for a beauty emergency.

Conair Bobby Pins. Bobby pins come in handy just like the hair bands do. You never know when you’re going to have that one little section of hair that just won’t cooperate. Pin that sucker down and show it who’s boss! I also keep many of these on-hand to pass out to those who might be in need. I’m just generous that way, I guess!

Beauty Blotters by Mary Kay. Yes, I’ve embraced my oily skin for keeping the wrinkles away, but it doesn’t mean I don’t want to get rid of some of it by lunchtime. These fine pieces of tissue blot away oil without taking off your makeup, freshening up your look for the rest of the day. I am just about out of these, so it’s time to get more. They are insanely affordable, and they work so well. Everyone who has any amount of oil, needs to have these in their makeup bag!

Well, that is what is in my current makeup bag…stay tuned to the contents of another makeup bag in the future. What’s in your makeup bag? 7 lipglosses?? I look forward to your response!

Q&A Monday

For all your beauty advice…

Good Morning and Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend. Recently, I’ve had quite a few people tell me they really look forward to Q&A Monday, so I want to tell them, thank you so much for that compliment. Keep the questions coming!! Read on about introducing basic makeup to your routine, straightening irons vs. styling tools, and a product to help your nail polish stay put!

Dear Brooke, I don’t wear makeup at all…usually not even on special occasions. I am blessed with a good complexion, but I never embraced the whole makeup thing. I am wanting to start wearing some makeup, but I know if I jump right in and put it all on at once, I won’t like it and then I’ll go back to wearing no makeup again. What do you suggest to slowly starting introducing into my daily non-routine? Thanks! Sarah D.

Dear Sarah, I have to say I’m shocked that you don’t even wear makeup on special occasions. Wow! You must have a beautiful complexion! I agree if you jump right in and go for a full face of makeup, you probably won’t like it and you’ll go back to au natural again. If you haven’t worn makeup, ever, it will feel way too heavy on your skin, so you’re right to want to slowly introduce a few products and then work your way into more, if you want to, of course. Start with some mascara to bring out your eyes. You don’t need to put on 4 coats of it, one coat will do fine. Try Great Lash by Maybelline. It’s inexpensive and it’s wildly popular. The little brush will give you great control. I would also use lipgloss to accompany the mascara. If you’re a lip balm girl, try a tinted lip balm to give your lips just a little hint of color. I really like Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm. Start with those two products and see how you like them…then let me know how you like them!

Dear Brooke, simple question…I keep seeing flat irons popping up all over the place and some of them say “straightening iron” and some of them say “styling tool”. What’s the difference? Emma Q.

Dear Emma, the difference is simple. They look the same at first glance, but a straightening iron is designed to just straighten your hair, and a styling tool allows you to create curls and waves, as well as straighten the hair. The difference is in the way the sides of the tool are shaped. You’ll notice the ones that are “styling tools” have a curved side where the iron is, allowing you to twist your hair around the tool. The straightening irons don’t have that curve, so if you twist and try to make curls or waves, you will probably end up with crimped hair instead of curls.

Dear Brooke, I love doing my manicures at home, and I am loving all the fun polish colors. I get so irritated when my polish chips less than a day after I’ve done all that work. Any tips, or product suggestions on getting my polish to last at LEAST 2 days? Stacy C.

Dear Stacy, Doesn’t that chip you off? Ha ha…couldn’t resist! I feel your pain. I’ve noticed nail polish has no trouble at all staying on fake nails, but wears down quickly on natural nails. The best product I’ve come across is Chip Skip by OPI. It’s like a primer for your nail polish, and it really works to make the polish stay for days. After you’ve prepared your nails with the filing, and trimming, and buffing, you apply this before you apply a base coat or nail polish. It’s a thin liquid that dries immediately, and helps the nail polish adhere to your nail and helps your manicure last a long time. I can’t live without it! Try it, you’ll love it!

Thanks for the great questions this week. Email me your questions for Q&A Monday to brookeknowsbeauty@hotmail.com

Get Down And Dirty…With Body Mud

For all your beauty advice…

One of my first memories is of me, playing in the dirt after a rain storm and that dirt had turned into the perfect consistency for mud. Not too wet, not too dry…just right. Some kids would make mud pies, some kids would make mud balls and have dirty mud fights. Me? I would rub the mud all over my arms, legs and face wondering what the mud would make my skin feel like. While I don’t remember the end result and if it made my three-year-old skin glow, I do remember that it was lots of fun playing “spa” at such a young age. Guess I was born into it.

So, what’s the appeal of mud, and what does it do to benefit your skin? Mud has many healing properties for the skin, and it has been used for centuries. Mud is great for detoxifying your skin; stimulating blood flow and releasing toxins from the body that have been put into the body by food, chemicals, pollution, etc. Mud can also have a slimming effect as a nice side benefit from detoxifying the system. Mud can treat skin conditions such as eczema, acne, and body aches. It can also relieve stress while enjoying the whole process of being slathered in it! I’ve read before that Cleopatra used Dead Sea Black Mud in her mud baths…I’m going to go out on a limb here and say, Cleo and I would have been BFFs for sure! So, where can you find such treatments? Well, you can head to a spa, because day spas are full of yummy treatments and offer many types of mud baths, OR, you can try a couple of products you apply yourself in the privacy of your home.

Fango Active Mud by Borghese is awesome! It’s a mineral enriched mud mask that is sourced from the volcanic hills in Tuscany. It can be used on the face, neck, and body, so it’s a great multi tasking mud. Apply it to clean skin and let it sit for about 20 minutes and rinse. Your skin will feel smoother, firmer and hydrated. Fango also has avocado and almond oil in it to moisturize and soften the skin. I love this mud mask. I got it in a gift set years ago, and I pick it up whenever I can. It’s a great way to escape when you can’t really escape.

Dead Sea Mineral Mud by Ahava is another at-home treat you need to try. This is a rich, black mineral mud harvested from The Dead Sea. This mask really works deep to purify, clean and restore the skin’s natural moisture balance. Your skin will feel firm and moisturized after you use this mask. I was introduced to this years ago when I worked as an esthetician and I did body treatments. It’s one of my favorite body mud products and like Fango, it’s a great way to unwind and treat yourself…you deserve it!

If you can get your hands on Cosmetic Clay, or Dead Sea Mud, you can make your own mud mask that’s tailored to what your skin needs. Add essential oils like lavender for relaxation, sandalwood to increase circulation, and add oils to hydrate your skin like almond oil, and avocado oil. Health food stores are the best places to find these ingredients, but call first to see if they have the ingredients in stock so you don’t waste a trip. Or, buy the body mud I’ve talked about here and enjoy! You could go out into your yard and do what I did at three-years-old, but I don’t recommend it.

Have you tried body mud? If so, what brands have you tried, or did you make it yourself? Or, are you one of the lucky ones that heads to the spa and lets the professionals handle it? I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

Spray It Like You Mean It! Hairspray Reviews

For all your beauty advice…

Hairspray has come a long way since the days of Aqua Net. Remember the days of teasing our hair into submission, and then shellacking it  into place so it would stay all day long? Yeah, that was fun to brush out after a long day. Although I’ll admit I do keep a rusty trusty can of Aqua Net on hand for shellacking emergencies, my taste has definitely evolved over the years. Here are some of my favorites:

Spray & Play by Big Sexy Hair. I’m thinking Big Sexy Hair is this generation’s Aqua Net. It comes in a huge red can and it’s a great hair spray that not only holds all day, but it adds fullness, volume, shine and flexibility. Even though Sexy Hair has root lifting products, Spray & Play is great to spray at the root for a little extra volume, and of course as a finishing touch on your style.

Maximum Hair Spray by Brocato. Another great spray to keep your ‘do in place all day. Brocato is a luxury hair care line that is usually found in high-end salons. (But, I did find it at Ulta and on Amazon.com) Like Spray & Play, this spray comes in an aerosol and is a great finishing product. Keeps your style in place, but doesn’t make it look dull with its hold. I dries fast, so make sure your hair is where you want it. Definitely gives you maximum hold, but adds shine to your hair as well.

Sheer Hold Hairspray by Fekkai. Sheer Hold Hairspray is going to be more on the gentle side of hair spray. It is a good finishing product that adds shine with avocado oil. This will give you a light hold on your style, so it’s best to use when you’re wearing your hair down and you want movement, but not stiff, and no static. You’ll be able to brush through your hair easily if you use this hairspray.

Restorative Hair Treatment Spray by Ojon. This is a really unique hair spray, because it’s also a hair treatment. It’s best for dry, damaged hair. It’s infused with seven exotic oils to not only add shine to the hair, but to nourish it as well. It offers a very light hold, but it does the trick. And, it smells amazing for a hairspray! Read the labels on Ojon before you try though…if you’re allergic to nuts, don’t try it. I’m not trying to steer you away from a great product, but people who have allergies have had reactions to Ojon. I am very happy I don’t have nut allergies, because I love this line!

Ok, I’ve given you a list of great finishing products, but I know they are all expensive. Not to worry, there are good hairsprays out there that won’t break the bank.

TRESemme’ makes an outstanding line of hairsprays. They come in different holds, so there’s plenty to choose from. A good classic that will never die with me? Anything from the Instant Freeze Collection by Aussie. Love the smell, love the hold it offers, love the price.

I just discovered something writing this review…I have WAY too many cans of hairspray, and I didn’t even name all my favorites! What’s your favorite? Do you spend a lot of money on hairspray and purchase at the salon, or do you have a drugstore favorite? Looking forward to your thoughts!

Q&A Monday

For all your beauty advice…

Good morning, and Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend, and I hope you have a great week. Thanks to everyone who has entered my October contest! I am excited to find out who the winner will be. Read on about blackheads, age spots on hands, and tipping at the spa.

Dear Brooke, I have blackheads on my nose, and only my nose. I feel like I’ve tried everything! From toners, to masks, to exfoliators, to pore strips and nothing is working. Any suggestions? Sarah W.

Dear Sarah, I know how frustrating blackheads can be. It's not enough to cover them up with makeup when you know they're there! I can recommend a few things in your battle to clear the pores. First, try a wash or a treatment with salicylic acid in it. This will topically exfoliate your skin and help get rid of blackheads. You can also try a face cleansing brush. You can buy them as just brushes, or you could get a little more high-tech and get the Clarisonic Skin Cleansing System. It's a motorized face brush that will work miracles on your skin! Ever since I got one, I haven't had blackheads on my nose at all. They are an investment, but totally worth it. Another route to try would be, have a facial and let the esthetician get in there and get them out. Not the most pleasant experience in the world, but they'll be able to get a different angle on your skin and get them out. Good luck!

Dear Brooke, I have noticed my hands are starting to get spots on them and they're looking old. Is there a hand cream, or some kind of treatment, I can use to get rid of the spots? Linda C.

Dear Linda, Have no fear, there are products out there to help lighten up the spots and to keep them at bay. But, there are so many out there, it’s hard to name just one. Look for a hand cream that says “anti-aging”. These hand creams will not only offer protection from future spots, but they will help fade the spots you already have. One I will mention is, Ahava Lightening Hand Cream SPF 12. It will provide you with great moisture, help reduce the appearance of spots, and protect with an SPF of 12. To help speed the process along, apply lemon juice to the spots, let it sit for about 10 minutes and rinse. Citric acid is known to help lighten spots; try it once a week for about a month and you should start seeing results.

Dear Brooke, I know it’s customary to tip your facialist, massage therapist, hair stylist, etc. But, is it ok to tip the receptionist? I just had a spa day, and the lady at the front desk was so kind and helpful. I wanted to give her a tip, but it’s not set up that way, and I don’t know if the receptionist is even allowed to accept a tip. I didn’t want it to feel awkward for either one of us, so I didn’t leave her anything. What’s the general rule on this? Janice D.

Dear Janice, That must have been some service you got on your spa day! I am happy to hear that. Too many times the receptionist gets looked over for any kind of appreciation, so it’s great you wanted to let her know you thought she was fantastic. Typically, spas and salons allow the receptionist to accept tips, it’s just not common knowledge. If you’re unsure, you could do a few things, #1 offer her the tip, and if she can’t accept it, she’ll let you know. #2, When you are making your appointment, you could ask what the protocol is on tipping. #3, if you’ve already left without tipping her, you can call and find out if it’s ok to tip her, and then drop by at your convenience and tip her to say thank you for a memorable day. And, #4, if you find out tips are not to be accepted by the front desk, the best thing you can do for the receptionist is call and ask to speak to a manager and tell them how she did. Sometimes a little recognition with the management team can go further than money (actually, you should do that either way!). I loved this question, thanks!

Thanks for the great questions, keep them coming! Email me your questions for Q&A Monday to brookeknowsbeauty@hotmail.com

Product Review…Jonathan Weightless Smooth Hydrating Balm

For all your beauty advice…

I think most of us have an ongoing battle with our hair. I know I do! It wants to curl, but I usually like it straight; the days I want to let it curl, it decides to lay flat…or worse, frizz out. I know I’m not alone when I describe my hair as wavy, borderline curly, but oh-so-frizzy. All I want to do is wash and go…is that too much to ask?!?! I envy you ladies with poker straight hair, I really do. And I know most of you out there with very straight hair would like to switch places with us frizzy girls for a day or two. Well, I’m all for it, so as soon as someone figures out how we can do that, let me know!

I’ve become a fan of hair products by Jonathan. The first product I ever tried by Jonathan was a hydrating balm. I got a sample of it and I was hooked. Then, I fell for Silky Dirt…smells amazing and adds so much great texture to your hair. Jonathan offers truly amazing products, and this new Weightless Smooth Hydrating Balm does not disappoint! There is a shampoo and a conditioner in this line, but I’ve only tried the Hydrating Balm. I’ll say this: If this product works this good with any shampoo and conditioner, the results must be really great when you use the ones from this line.

This balm is great for all hair types. I know sometimes, when looking for an anti-frizz product, you have to really read the labels and make sure you are buying the right one for your hair. If you get one that’s for thick and unruly hair and your hair is fine, you aren’t going to like the results. Same goes if your hair is thick and unruly and you buy a lighter serum, it will do nothing for your hair. So, knowing that all hair types will respond to this product is a good thing. All the choices can be very overwhelming!

Some anti-frizz products can make your hair feel waxy, greasy, or “coated”. I like to have body and manageability to my hair, but I don’t like to feel like I have tons of product in it. The first time I used this, I decided to blow dry my hair with my round brush. I loved the way the brush moved through my hair without a fight, which made the blow drying process go so much faster…got to love that! The next test was going to be to use it and let my curly/wavy/frizzy hair air dry and see the results. Well, it’s official…I found my wash-and-go product! Wow, the result I got from using this and letting nature take its course was truly amazing! I used a small amount of a root lifting product in my bangs and used this balm on the rest of my hair. The only thing I had to blow dry were my bangs to get them to look polished and I was able to let my hair dry naturally with pretty results.

Like most great products, this one is a bit of an investment at $24, but, also like most great products, totally worth it if you need to fight frizz! This Hydrating Balm is 100% vegan, hydrating to your hair while blocking humidity, and adds some great shine as well. Invest away, people! You will be happy that you did!

Have you tried any of the new Jonathan Weightless Smooth products? If so, what do you think of them? If you pick this up, let me know your thoughts!

Miracle Products

For all your beauty advice…

We’re all looking for a miracle, when it comes to a beauty product, right? We want something that does what it claims to do…perform miracles. Some products do, some products don’t. But, what about the products that boldly put the word “Miracle” right in the name of the product? Do they really stand up to the name, or are they just hype? Read on, and I’ll tell you.

Miracle Mask by Nude Skin Care. Naturally derived AHA’s make up this mask. It claims it will gently exfoliate the skin and give you a porcelain perfect complexion over time. It also says it will stimulate circulation making your skin look bright, refreshing and glowing…One order of younger looking skin, coming up! The consistency of this mask is more like a gel than a traditional mask. Apply a thin layer of the mask and leave it on for 5 minutes. It may tingle right after you apply it. I didn’t feel a tingle, but that could be because I am used to using stronger products on my skin…years in this industry have “seasoned” me for this type of product. Remove the mask with warm water and follow-up with a moisturizer. Of course, Nude Skin Care recommends their moisturizer, but any moisturizer will do. So, is it truly a Miracle Mask? It definitely stimulates circulation, so your skin looks flushed and pretty when the mask is done. Your skin will feel smoother and look tighter, and refreshed. As far as giving me the porcelain complexion it claims? Not really…honestly, I have never met a product that can truly give you a flawless, porcelain complexion. You’re either born with it, or you’re not. I’ve only met a handful of people with truly flawless skin, and nice as they may be…I am insanely jealous!

Miracle Worker by Philosophy. Philosophy has a whole line of anti-aging products called the Miracle Worker. The best one, by far, is the Miracle Worker Retinoid Pads. Think of it as an at-home peel that you use at night. It comes with 60 pads, so it’s approximately a 2 month treatment. In this time, you should see an over-all improvement in your skin tone. It claims to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, and pores appear smaller. So, does it live up to the name? Abso-freaking-lutely!! This is one amazing product, and it truly earns the word “Miracle”! After just one week of using this product, my skin looked so good and felt so soft. A rep with this company told me to think of it as looking at a dusty shelf and blowing the dust off the shelf…that’s what this does for your skin. It gets rid of that top layer of dull skin and renews your skin and makes you look, and feel, fabulous!

Both of these miracle products are pricey, no doubt about that. But, even though the initial investment may hurt a bit, you will be happy you took the plunge. Miracles can happen!

Have you tried either one of these products? If so, what are your thoughts? I look forward to your response!
