Line Review…Burt’s Bees

For all your beauty advice…

I’ve  been using Burt’s Bees for years! I came across a tube of lip balm by them at a vitamin store and I have been using it ever since. I have written about Burt’s Bees before on Earth Day, see Staying Beautiful With Mother Nature. I mentioned it because it’s a natural line, but I didn’t write as much about it as I wanted to. First let me start by saying, Burt’s a real guy, it’s not just a silly name they came up with for a product. Burt used to farm bees and sell the honey; he did this for about a dozen years and for some reason, he kept the beeswax figuring one day he might need it. The idea came to start making candles and see if there was any interest. There was interest…a lot of it. The candles sold out and over time, the candle making turned into lip balm making and it’s just grown from there.

The Beeswax Lip Balm is the most popular product in the Burt’s Bees line. Before they could put this lip balm into a plastic tube, they wanted to find someone who would use recycled plastic. I guess it took a long time to convince a plastic company to use recycled plastic, but they did convince them and now that company is one of the leaders in using recycled plastic. Hmmm…that shows that standing up for what you believe in can  be beneficial to everyone involved. The lip balm is the Goldilocks of lip balms for me…Just Right! It’s soft enough so it glides on nice, it’s got just the right amount of “tingle” to it, and it lasts a long time. For around $3, what’s not to love, right? That one simple product put them on the map and now they have many different kinds of lip balms, lip shimmers, and my favorite, lip glosses to choose from!

Another favorite product of mine from this line is the Garden Tomato Complexion Soap. It’s great for oily/acne-prone skin and the natural acids in tomatoes help balance out your skin’s PH. The first time I came across this cleansing soap, I was actually happy I had oily/acne-prone skin! It smells amazing, really amazing. The only thing that could be better with this soap is if they put basil scent in it…then I would really love it! Of course, then I would probably try to eat it and, natural or not, you shouldn’t eat soap…believe me, I’ve had a mishap before…long story from childhood and sisters being sisters.

Another skin care favorite of mine is the Pore Refining Mask. It’s made with French green clay and herbs and flowers to tighten pores and leave your skin looking refreshed. I really like how unique this mask is. It’s in a powder form and you add water to make a paste and apply it to your skin. I like the process of turning it into a mask for me. The mixing together of the mask and water, adding a little more mask if I add too much water…I know some people prefer their products already nicely mixed, but I like to get involved…think of it as Interactive Skin Care. Hmmm, I could be on to something.

I wish I could talk about every product I am familiar with in this line, but there’s not enough time in the day. Plus, it has grown so much, I am still learning about all the new things they continue to add. Burt’s Bees can be found at health food stores like Vitamin Cottage, Sunflower Market and Whole Foods. I have also come across it at Target. Some day I want to see it at Sephora. Ulta carries it and of course you can always go online to burtsbees.com to get it, too. Not sure where to start or what to get? I say get the lip balm to start. Also, I always see starter kits from them put together so you can try them at smaller sizes before deciding which ones to buy. The starter kits also make great gifts.

Ok, what about you? Have you tried anything by Burt’s Bees? Honestly, I’ll be surprised if you haven’t and even more surprised if you’ve never heard of it! What’s your favorite product in the line? I look forward to hearing about your favorites.
