Beauty On A Budget…Olay Body Wash

For all your beauty advice…

I need another product like I need a hole in the head! But, since I’m always on the lookout for a good deal, I felt I could completely justify this purchase. I’ve discovered at places like Target and Wal-Mart, that if you browse the end caps of the aisle near the back wall, you can find all kinds of fun stuff on clearance. I have also discovered that they’re not products that are old or discontinued, but it’s usually stuff that has been bundled together by the manufacturer as a gift set. Since the stores can’t take apart the gift set and sell the items separately, they have to put the set on sale to get it out of the store. Not so good for the manufacturer, but fantastic for the consumer!

I picked up a gift set that included a razor by Venus, Secret Flawless deodorant and a 10 oz. bottle of Olay Body Wash Plus Creme Ribbons. This set was on sale for $7…not too bad considering the average total retail price of all three products would equal $19. I have been wanting to try this body wash by Olay. The commercials are cool and the wash looks pretty in the packaging…I’m a sucker for packaging. So, I figured to get all three products at $7, I couldn’t lose. And, I couldn’t wait to try the body wash.

For some of us, a shower is the main start to our day and we want to get in, get out, and get on with our lives. I am like that most of the time, but every now and then, I like to take my time in the shower and enjoy the products I have in there. I was definitely in this frame of mind when I tried this wash for the first time. The best way to use it is to put some on one of those mesh shower puffs and lather up. The consistency of this product is really nice and creamy. It’s almost like a lotion that lathers up…and does it lather! I love suds, the more the better, and this product definitely delivered in that area! It smelled really nice, in fact, it made my whole bathroom smell really nice for a long time after I was done showering.

It does claim that after prolonged use, your skin will feel more moisturized and you probably won’t need lotion. That may be for more humid climates, but I don’t care how moisturizing a body wash claims to be, this is Colorado and our skin needs lotion here! After using it, my skin did feel really soft and it smelled good, too. Not too strong of a scent, nice and subtle. It can also be used as a shaving cream, which left my legs feeling great after I shaved with it.

Ok, I think I spent way too much time in the shower trying this product, but I really like it. It definitely gets a thumbs up from me and doesn’t feel like a drug store product at all. With all the suds and the nice scent to go along with it, it felt pretty luxurious. On its own, it retails for about $5. I know I paid $7 and got three full size products, but I will for sure spend $5 on this in the future. Totally worth it, give it a try if you haven’t already! I haven’t even tried the other two products that came with it, but I’ll let you know what I think of those when I do!

Have you tried Olay Body Wash Plus With Creme Ribbons? What did you think? What are your favorite body washes to use? I look forward to your responses so I can go out and try those, too!

Beauty Emergency

For all your beauty advice…

We’ve all had moments, usually before a big event, where something goes wrong with our appearance. The wrong shade of lipstick isn’t such a big deal, just take it off and put a different shade on. I’m talking about the beauty emergencies that can not only put us into a panic, but can make us rethink going out in public at all! I’ve had a few people write in and ask questions about how to fix certain situations and I chose the top two most popular ones that were sent to me.

Beauty Emergency #1: You’ve over-tweezed or over-waxed your brows. Ok, this one is cause for panic! I’ve done this one to myself. I can remember just about an hour before heading out to a party, I thought I needed to wax my brows. I figured it would be easy, after all, I’ve done this for a long time a quick brow wax will be just fine. Ha! Because I was in a hurry, I kept trying to even up both sides and I finally gave up when my left brow was almost gone. And, of course, I didn’t have a brow pencil to fill in the  blanks I had just created. So, when you are going to tweeze or wax, make sure you have plenty of time and patience. But, in the event that you do over-do it, here’s what you can do to fix it. If you have an eyebrow kit, you’re in luck! Most of these come with stencils and the products you need to fill in your brows. Just hold the stencil up to where your brows should be, and color in with the brow gel provided in the kit. Set with powder and you’re good to go. If you don’t have a kit, but you have the brow pencil, just fill in the missing brows with feathery strokes and again, set with powder. Don’t have either of those things? Yeah, neither did I. Find an eyeshadow that matches your brow shade, or mix together a few shadows to match and you can fill in with that. Use an eyeshadow brush or Q-tip to apply the shadow and set with powder. What did I do to fix my problem plucking? All I can say is, thank God I had bangs at the time! They were on the long side because I was trying to grow them out, but I happily styled them as normal bangs and just dealt with them getting in my eyes all night. Now, I just tweeze a stray hair or two when I see them and leave the waxing up to someone else. Just because I can wax my brows, doesn’t mean I want to anymore…not after that!

Beauty Emergency #2: You’ve applied self-tanner and it’s too orange or it’s streaked. Yup, been there with this one, too. First of all, let me just say that at least you’re using self tanner and not damaging your skin by using a tanning bed. A couple of things to remember when using self tanner: Most important, a few days before you know you’re going to be using it, make sure you exfoliate and moisturize the areas you are going to be tanning. Exfoliating the skin provides an even surface for the product to adhere, and look even. Also, remember that the elbows and knees are spots that are naturally darker, so ease up on the product when going around these areas. If it’s just a few spots that have streaked, make a paste with lemon juice and baking soda and apply the mixture to a wash cloth and gently scrub the areas. The lemon juice is a natural skin lightener and the baking soda will gently exfoliate the area. This can be used on your face as well. If the tanning lotion has turned your finger nails and hands brown from the application, use the baking soda and lemon juice mixture on a nail brush and scrub away the color. Someone told me that whitening toothpaste will work on your finger nails to bleach away the color from the tanner. Hmmm…haven’t tried that, but good to know it’s an option.

So, the next time you’re faced with one of these situations, there are a few tips to help ease your panic and fix the problem.

Pink Hair…Yes Or No?

For all your beauty advice…

I’ve always thought my hair color was boring. Growing up, most of my friends either had blonde hair or red hair. There were only a select few that had a similar shade to mine. I have always been intrigued with blonde hair. Maybe it’s because if I went blonde, I would look absolutely ridiculous! My hair is dark brown. Don’t get me wrong, I like the shade…now. But we always think the grass is greener, right? I would love to be blonde for a day, but unless it’s a wig, it’s not happening.

Lately, I’ve become intrigued with pink hair. When I went to beauty school, we didn’t have access to the cool colors we see people wearing now. Those colors were just becoming popular, but not popular enough to make it into beauty supply stores and salons. Now I see them everywhere and I get asked questions about the crazy colors. Especially pink. People ask me, why are people wearing it and why do they think it’s cool. I tell them my opinion…because it is cool! If I could pull it off, you can bet your bottom dollar, I would have hot pink hair right now.

Why can’t I pull it off? Well, for a few reasons. The first one being, I don’t have the patience for the process it would take to get my hair hot pink. If you are wanting to try this and your hair is dark brown, you are going to have to bleach (damage) your hair first and then apply the pink hair color. There won’t be much pink going on if you apply it to dark brown hair that hasn’t been lifted in color. Another reason I can’t do it is, it’s just not my personality. Me personally wearing hot pink hair would be like my dad getting his ear pierced…just can’t pull it off. (Anyone who knows my dad is laughing out loud right now imagining him with an earring!)

For those of you who have been intrigued and are at a point in life where you can do it, go for it! Whether it’s light pink, pink highlights, or full on hot pink hair, wear it and enjoy it! I love the way blonde hair looks with pink highlights. The contrast of the light shade against the bright color looks really cool. Another trend to try on blonde hair is just coloring the tips of your hair pink. You can have so much fun with this color! I think a lot of people who know me personally might be surprised to hear that I say this is a “DO”! Just because I can’t wear it doesn’t mean I don’t think it can look good, because it can.

Some celebrities I’ve seen rocking this ‘do? Rachel McAdams, Joss Stone, T.R. Knight from Grey’s Anatomy and of course, the singer Pink. She almost has to have pink hair to live up to that name, doesn’t she? Let’s not forget jewelry designer and makeup creator, Tarina Tarantino. You can’t think of Tarina without thinking of pink hair, and it looks good on her…at least I think so.

So, even though you’ll never see me with hot pink hair, I think it’s a definite yes! Have fun with your color and don’t be afraid to try something new. After all, it’s just color and if you don’t like it, you can color over it. I’ve done some crazy things over the years with my hair but I never got to try this. I wish I would have.

I am sure I’m going to have differing opinions on this, so share them with me! What are your thoughts on pink hair? What’s the craziest color you’ve ever had on your hair, accidental or on purpose?

Q&A Monday

For all your beauty advice…

Good morning everyone and Happy Monday! Thanks to everyone who entered a guess in Friday’s contest! I will be announcing the winner, and the answer, soon. As always, I got some great questions for today. Read on about protecting your hair from the sun, bold nail polish colors and guy-liner!

Dear Brooke, Do you need sunscreen for your hair? If so, do they make products designed for your hair or can you put sunscreen on your hair? I feel like the sun is frying my colored hair! Melissa F.

Dear Melissa, That is a good question! With warm weather right around the corner, so many of us are going to be so focused soaking up the sun and protecting our skin, we often forget our hair needs love too. I won’t get into the science part of what UV rays are doing to your skin or hair, there’s not enough room here. But, I will tell you that too much exposure to the sun can weaken your hair and fade your color. Sun exposure destroys the interior of the hair, causing the color to lighten up. I wouldn’t recommend putting the sunscreen you put on your skin on your hair. That would be a greasy mess! Hair care lines are starting to add sun protecting products to their lines. I like Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking Spray. It prevents color from fading and adds nice shine to your hair. If you’re going to be in the sun for a long period of time, wear a hat! That’s going to be the best protection for your hair.

Dear Brooke, I’ve seen some great nail polish colors OPI has out for spring, but really who wears green and blue nail polish? I’m 33 years old and I have a professional job. I like the fun colors you see every season, but can someone my age with a corporate job really pull these off? What’s your opinion on this? Laura A.

Dear Laura, I agree that OPI comes out with some great colors every season. And who names them?? I want that job! This is a good question, and you asked for my opinion, so I’ll give it to you. Personally, I wouldn’t wear the blues and greens on my finger nails. I might have fun with those colors on my toes, but not on my hands. I may have 15 years ago. By the way, where were these fun colors 15 years ago?? I would have had them on all the time then! Just because we’re in our 30’s doesn’t mean we can’t have fun and enjoy the trends, but I think we should take a more subtle approach if we want to be taken seriously. But, if you have tried them on and you like them, go for it! You mentioned you have a corporate job…will you be able to wear green and blue nail polish at work? Check with your manager to make sure it’s not against the dress code. Wear the fun colors on the weekends or put them on your toes.

Dear Brooke, Guy-liner yes or no? James D.

Dear James, Hmmm…guy-liner. I have a few different opinions on this subject. Normally, I would say no, no, no! Men shouldn’t wear makeup, period! But, having worked with a few men who like to wear eyeliner and mascara, I have to say that it depends on the situation and the guy. Now, that doesn’t mean I want my husband sharing my makeup with me, it would definitely be a “no” on him. But, I’ve seen some men who wear it and it actually looks great! The men I know who use it are artistic, whether they’re in the makeup industry, or the world of music, it seems that I only see it on the creative ones. So, it looks like I can’t give you a firm yes or no. I say it depends on the guy and on the situation. I don’t know what your situation is, or what type of guy you are, but if you’re intrigued give it a try!

Staying Beautiful With Mother Nature

For all your beauty advice…

In honor of Earth Day, I thought I would share a few of my favorite natural and organic products. I admit, I am new to the whole concept of Earth Day. It is a struggle for me to remember to recycle and although I buy those reusable bags from Whole Foods, Vitamin Cottage and Sunflower Market, I always leave the darn things in my car and defeat the whole purpose!! And as for makeup?? I never cared about ingredients or whether it was natural or not. But, as I’ve been learning, I am finding there is a whole world of beauty in our world…go figure.

I absolutely love Pacifica. Love, love, love it!! Perfumes, lotions, shower gels, candles, soaps. This is such an amazing, luxurious line that is actually affordable! Made with natural ingredients, Pacifica’s products are cruelty-free and 100% vegan. Portions of their proceeds go to fighting near shore ocean pollution. The scents this line has are so nice and yummy and inspired by places all over the world. My favorite in this line is the Tuscan Blood Orange. I can’t even describe it, all I can say is WOW and YUM! Everything in this line smells so good, but this one is truly amazing. The solid perfume can not only be used as a fragrance, but you can also put it on the ends of your hair to nourish the hair and protect it from splitting, and it makes your hair smell nice! Have I mentioned that I love Pacifica?? I want to work for them!

Like Vanilla? Check out Lavanila. Another bath/body/fragrance line that smells amazing! Also natural and organic, these scents are so nice. Everything has the scent of vanilla in it and I love that. There is one scent that is just vanilla, for those of you who are crazy about that scent. My favorite is the Vanilla Coconut. It’s such a warm scent and I love the way it smells on my skin. This line is completely free of harsh chemicals. It’s great for those who are sensitive to typical fragrance because of the all natural ingredients. It’s eco-friendly and not tested on animals.

Burt’s Bees is the first line that introduced me to natural skin care products. I just happened to grab a lip balm from Vitamin Cottage one day and I was hooked. When I first discovered Burt’s Bees, the line was pretty small. Now, it’s a full line of skin care, body care, and makeup. They even have a separate line just for men, so the guys need to check this stuff out! I love the way the Bay Rum Shaving Soap smells.

Those are just a few of my favorite natural lines. Want to get really beautiful with the help of Mother Earth? I just read in a magazine that Dandelions can fade age spots and Lavender can cure dandruff. Wow. If you slice open a stem of a Dandelion and massage the white sap onto age spots a few times a day, they’ll start to fade. So, when I see them cropping up on my lawn, I won’t get irritated, I’ll think of it as a gift from Mother Nature…or as a sign from her that I need to use them! Steep Lavender flowers in hot water and after it cools, use it as a rinse after you shampoo to get rid of dandruff. The scent is very relaxing, too.

We can all do a little something to honor Earth Day today. Use a dry shampoo instead of washing to save water. Remember those reusable bags when you go grocery shopping. You know how stores give you a 5 or 10 cent credit when you bring your own bags? I found out yesterday that Whole Foods now gives you the option of donating that credit for their foundation. Good to know for when I actually remember those bags!

So, what will you do to celebrate Earth Day today? I think I’ll purchase something from Pacifica because I know that a portion of that will go to keeping oceans clean. See? I can justify a purchase any time! Happy Earth Day!

Fantasy Spa Day

For all your beauty advice…

I recently read something that was talking about a Fantasy Dinner. I even made a comment on that in Beauty And The Beer. It got me thinking that instead of a Fantasy Dinner, I would love to think about a Fantasy Spa Day. Who would I invite, dead or alive, famous or not famous, to share a spa day with? The “rules” of a Fantasy Dinner are you choose 5 people and then give reasons why they would be on your list. Makes for great conversation. I can’t choose just 5, but I will try to keep it to a minimum.

Before I list the people I would want there, let me start by saying to all my close friends, of course you would be attending this spa day, think of this list as our special guests to make for an interesting experience for all of us.

Cleopatra. She is #1 on my list. When you think of ancient beauty, you can’t help but think of Cleopatra. She is the legendary definition of beauty. I would love to hear her beauty tips and skin care recipes, and maybe she could tell us why putting alligator poo on your face isn’t such a bad thing.

Princess Diana. Poise, grace, royalty, fashion icon. Princess Diana’s wedding made little girls around the world believe fairy tales do come true. I remember waking up before the sun to watch her marry Prince Charles. The fairy tale didn’t last, but she stayed a true Princess in my eyes. With everything she endured, I think she needs a spa day. Also, being a self-proclaimed Princess, like recognizes like; us Princesses need to stick together. And I would ask her to bring her jewelry so we could ooh and ahh over it during lunch.

Jennifer Aniston. I would have her there for a lot of reasons. Mainly because I am a huge fan of hers…Team Aniston all the way! All you Team Jolie fans, leave your comments to yourself, this is my list!! I would also want her there because I could use her as a model to show all the technicians exactly what I want to look like. Plus, she’s loaded…she could pay for the day for all of us!!

My Mom. Not famous, and unfortunately no longer with us. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing my mother knew she was larger than life. She had an amazing personality and such a big heart and that woman knew how to entertain! She would definitely keep any lulls in conversation to a minimum because she knew how to interact with everyone. She would love a pedicure, and I would give anything for just one more day with her. (Maybe I should have put her as my #1 guest? Sorry mom, but I know you understand!)

Carmindy. If you have ever watched What Not To Wear, you know who this is. She is the makeup artist on this show and I think she’s pretty amazing. I love watching her do the makeovers on the people on that show, and I just think she’s adorable. She can do all of our makeup after we have facials.

Bethenny Frankel. I am 100% not ashamed to say that I am 100% addicted to The Real Housewives Of NYC! Bethenny is my favorite housewife, always has been, always will be. I love her on the show and I think she would be a fun guest to have at any party. Her and my mom would have a blast together!

I think this would be a fun spa day! And I think my guest list doesn’t have conflicting personalities, so everyone would get along. I know when people make their list for a Fantasy Dinner, they tend to choose all different types of people for some heated discussions. We don’t want that for our spa day. We’re supposed to be relaxing and having fun.

Ok, your turn. Who would you invite for a Fantasy Spa Day and why? I can’t wait to hear your choices.

Beauty And The Beer

For all your beauty advice…

When I told my husband what the title of today’s article was going to be, he asked if it was about the two of us. Ha ha. Well, I guess I’ll take that as a compliment to mean that I am Beauty, because he’s most definitely Beer! No, this is not an article about us. I recently came across an article in a magazine that caught my eye, claiming that you might be able to reverse signs of aging with beer. According to Woman’s World, Polyphenols found in beer and wine (yippee!) are strong antioxidants, which fight off free radicals. Free radicals cause 80% of premature skin aging. You can find Polyphenols in certain fruits like blueberries and raspberries if you’re not a drinker, but this is good news for those who like to crack open a cold one after work. I started reading on it further and I found loads of information on the beauty benefits of beer.

Apparently this is old news. Really old news. Many moons ago, beer was not only offered to gods at festivals, but women used it to refresh their skin. High in vitamin B and brewer’s yeast, beer can cleanse and nourish the skin, and even clear up acne.  Certain spas around the world are even offering beer baths. It’s been noted that even Cleopatra kept her skin looking beautiful by bathing in beer. (She’s #1 on my list of who I would want to attend my fantasy dinner) I’m not sure I would want to sit in a tub of beer, but I can think of a few people who would thoroughly enjoy visiting a spa that offered that!

I’ve always heard that rinsing your hair with beer once a month is a great way to make the hair soft and shiny. The proteins found in the malt and hops are said to repair damage and add shine. People who use beer to treat their hair claim that a beer rinse also makes their hair look and feel thicker. If the proteins from the ingredients in the brew really do attach to the hair, it can strengthen the hair as well. It’s a pretty simple process to do a beer rinse. Just take some flat beer that doesn’t have a strong odor and after shampooing your hair, apply the beer to your hair, working it all the way through and rinse with warm water. I think odor would be a big issue here. I’ve been the victim of an accidental beer bath once or twice in my life, and that smell stays with you. My advice would be, if you’re going to do this rinse, do it when you don’t have to be anywhere.

So, if beer can slow down aging, cure acne and make our hair feel thick and strong, I wonder if it can do anything for the nails. After all, our hair and nails are made from the same protein so I did a little more searching . No trends on beer manicures, but I did find out that a beer and vinegar soak can kill nail fungus on hands and feet…interesting. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see beer treatments popping up in spas all around us. I mean, if you can get a fish pedicure, why not a beer manicure? Maybe I’ll have to do some experimenting at our next Family Spa Night. More men might start flocking to spas on a regular basis if their treatments involve beer!

It was fun researching this and to see how much information is out there. I even found some products that are produced with Brewer’s Yeast, including beer shampoo. Hmmm…haven’t tried it, but if I do I will certainly let you know what it’s like. Bathe in it, drink it, or shampoo with beer, it looks like it can keep you beautiful. In moderation, of course. Even though the ingredients in beer can be beneficial to our health and beauty, the alcohol in it can counteract that and speed up the aging process…but that’s a whole different Oprah.

What about you? Have you ever rinsed your hair with beer? Tell me about it. I want to know how your hair felt after and if the smell stayed with you. Have you ever bathed in beer? I really want to hear about that!

Q&A Monday

For all your beauty advice…

Happy Monday everyone…is it Friday yet? Thanks for the questions this week. As always, you threw some good ones my way. Keep them coming!

Dear Brooke, I get my 5 o’clock shadow by noon if I shave that day. I’ve always just used generic razors but they have to be a 2 blade or more to handle the heavy hair that I have. I’ve never tried an exfoliating scrub before, is there one that you recommend? Let me know what to look for in those or some suggestions and I’ll give that a try. THANKS! Steve S.

Dear Steve, Thanks for the question! You posted this question after reading This One’s For The Guys…Clean Close Shave, so I thought I would feature it today. Let me start by saying, you’re on the right track with using a razor with multiple blades. 2 blades or more generally result in a closer shave. Exfoliating before shaving can give you a very clean shave. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and exposes the hair follicle, allowing that razor to really get close. There are tons of products out there aimed toward men now (just what you needed, right?) so take your pick! A couple I suggest are Nivea For Men Exfoliating Face Scrub and Zirh Aloe Exfoliator. I haven’t tried the one by Nivea, but I have actually tried the one by Zirh. It’s a gentle exfoliator, but it really does the trick. If you want to stop that 5:oo shadow from showing up at noon, look into a hair growth inhibitor. That will slow down the hair growth within a few weeks and give you a longer lasting shave. Thanks for the question, and good luck!

Dear Brooke, Do I really need an SPF in my hand cream if I’m never in the sun? I wear it on the days when I know I’ll be outside, but what about the days that I’m just running quick errands and I’m inside most of the day? Kristine K.

Dear Kristine, This is a great question because most of my favorite hand creams don’t have SPF in them, and I often wonder why. I think our hands get neglected a lot when it comes to moisturizing and protecting them from the sun. Even when you’re not outside all day, you are still exposed to the UV rays from the sun that can cause damage. I am a good example of this. I don’t like being out in the sun (Yes, I know some of you think I am crazy because of this) therefore, I would skip the sunscreen step in my skin care routine because I figured I didn’t need it. Fast forward to today and I have lovely little spots showing up on my cheeks that weren’t there before. I know if I had taken preventative measures years ago and applied the sunscreen, I wouldn’t have those spots now. I learned the hard way that just because I avoided the sun, that doesn’t mean I wasn’t exposed. I strongly suggest you use a hand cream with SPF during the day, inside or outside, and use the luxurious ones that don’t have it at night, before bed.

…and while we’re on the subject…

Dear Brooke, What’s the difference between hand lotion and body lotion? Aren’t they really the same thing? Can I just use regular lotion on my hands? Kate G.

Dear Kate, There is no rule that says you can’t use body lotion as hand lotion, but I will tell you the difference between the two. Most hand lotions/creams have a thicker consistency, moisturizing your hands on a deeper level. We wash our hands so much throughout the day, and if you have a job where you are always washing your hands, a hand cream is going to work better for you than a body lotion. A lot of hand creams have ingredients that aid in healing, so they target really dry skin and are good for your nails. Can you use a body lotion on your hands? Of course you can! Can you use a hand cream on your body? Hmmm…I wouldn’t for a few reasons. First of all, since hand lotions/creams have a thicker consistency, if you apply them to your back or chest, you may breakout from the heavy product. Second, most hand lotions/creams are more expensive than regular body lotion and come in much smaller packaging, so it would be a waste of money to use something designed for your hands all over your body.

Once again, thank you for the great questions. Have a question you want featured in Q&A Monday? Email me at brookeknowsbeauty@hotmail.com I look forward to hearing from you!

Why You’re Worth It

For all your beauty advice…

According to worldwatch.org Americans spend 8 billion dollars annually on cosmetics. 8 billion… Wow, that’s a whole lot of lip gloss! With so many brands on the market, all of them trying to convince us they are the best, it’s easy to see how that adds up. Even the company slogans are telling us it’s ok to buy. L’Oreal tells us we’re “Worth It”, Maybelline wants you to believe you’re “Born With It” and Cover Girl leads us to believe that life is “Easy, Breezy, Beautiful” if we use their products. MAC targets men and women with “All ages, All races, All sexes”. Just like I am a sucker for pretty packaging, a catchy slogan usually draws me in, too.

So, why do we spend so much money each year and why is it ok…especially when so many of us are faced with hard times right now? I think L’Oreal nailed it…we are “Worth It”. We work hard. Whether we work at home raising our kids and running a household (probably the most challenging and under-appreciated job in the world), running your own business, or “working for the man”, we all work hard. A little indulgence isn’t going to hurt every now and then, and it’s actually good for you to treat yourself.

Ever notice how a bad hair day can set the tone for the rest of the day? Has an unexpected blemish almost stopped you from going on a date? Amazing how these small things can seem so huge at the time! Then, notice how that bad hair day doesn’t mean so much when you find the right lip gloss or eye shadow? Seriously! I know some of you may be laughing at how trivial that seems, but cosmetics plays a huge role in self-esteem. It’s pretty simple. If you look bad, you feel bad, you’re probably going to have a bad day. If you look good, you feel good, you’re going to have a great day!

I think it’s absolutely ok to indulge. Get that massage once a month. It feels good and it helps keep your back healthy. Get a facial, it’s relaxing and it’s good for your skin. I personally don’t like facials, (I’ll explain another time) but I know some women who can’t live without them, and they shouldn’t have to. While you’re at it, go ahead and get a manicure and a pedicure and make a day of it. We all need a spa day once in a while! In fact, I think health insurance should cover spa treatments…thoughts, anyone?

Some of us have that one product we can’t live without and we’ll cut corners in other areas in order to keep that product. What’s mine? I can’t live without eyeshadow primer. I’m still trying out different brands, but the one I am falling in love with is Shadow Insurance by Too Faced. It’s $17 for a small tube of it and a little goes such a long way, it’s going to last forever. Not really an indulgence, but the point I’m trying to make is, no matter how tight my budget is, I will make room in it for this product.

For all you men out there wondering why we spend so much money on this stuff…as I once told my husband when he asked this question: If I didn’t spend money on this stuff and wear it to make me look my best, you wouldn’t have looked twice in my direction, so shut up and let me reapply. Enough said.

So, if it’s lip gloss that keeps you happy, a new fragrance, or that expensive night cream you found that really does perform the miracles it claims, you ARE worth it. I honestly don’t think you can put a price on happiness, and if there is a product, or a spa service that just makes your day,go for it, you deserve it. So do I. I think I may have to schedule a massage now!

What about you? What is the one product, or spa service, that you won’t live without?
